For the Girl Hesitant to Rush

June 19, 2021 by Keilynn Sapp

To the potential new member that is more nervous and uncertain about recruitment than excited, I’ve been there, but I promise it is so worth it, and the Lord will put you where you need to be.

In high school, I was firm on the fact that I wouldn’t rush, and I would not be in a sorority. I knew I wasn’t the stereotypical sorority girl, and I didn’t think I fit the mold.

However, after my senior year was abruptly cut short, I became very fearful about my move to college. I knew that I had to put myself out there and find my place, so I decided to sign up for recruitment.

Rush week was nothing like I expected, but as the week went on I felt more at peace with the process. Receiving a bid from Alpha Delta Pi is something that I will forever be grateful for. I didn’t instantly find my best friends on day one, but I am so thankful that I have now found my best friends and the Christian community that I so desperately needed.

Here are some things I wish I would’ve realized long before recruitment week.

  1. Joining a sorority is not “buying friends”. I’ll be honest here, I truly thought that it was before I joined a sorority myself. It may seem that way, but there is no price on the pure happiness that it will bring. A sorority is so much more than a group of friends. You automatically have 200+ cheerleaders, supporters, and encouragers as soon as you join a sisterhood.

  2. There is no “mold.” I didn’t think I’d be accepted into a sorority because I didn’t have the cute and trendy Instagram or dress like a sorority girl. I quickly realized, there is no mold. Come as you are, and you will be accepted.

  3. Be yourself - I promised myself at the beginning recruitment that I would not change myself or my actions to get a bid. Thankfully, I didn’t have to. Being the true version of yourself will get you so much further. You will be loved and accepted for who you are!

I was so concerned and doubtful going into recruitment. I questioned it every single day. I am eternally grateful that it worked out and that I found my home away from home at 112 Olympic Blvd. The love, support, comfort, encouragement, and Christian community within Epsilon Pi is unmatched.

So, if you’re a PNM uncertain about recruitment, I highly encourage you to take a leap of faith. I guarantee you that you’ll be so glad you did. And, to my sisters, thank you for loving so well and making it such a joy to be a part of this sorority.

With love,

Logan Sweat Fall ‘20
