What it means to be an ADPi

Hi love! My name is Charlotte Snyder and I am a rising sophomore at Georgia SouthernUniversity, where I am a dedicated member of Alpha Delta Pi.

As someone who grew up with two sisters whom I am very close with, I knew I wanted to join a sorority to expand upon the sisterhood I already had. In fall of 2022 I joined Alpha Delta Pi and gained 250 new sisters, but little did I know I would gain so much more than that.

In high school, I was always very involved in clubs, sports, activities, etc. Transitioning from a small high school to a big university was daunting to say the least- where would I even begin to get involved and find my new identity? During my first few weeks as an Alpha, I learned about all the ways Alpha Delta Pi offered me to get involved within our sorority, school, and community.

Playing sports my whole life, I needed to join a team down in Statesboro to satisfy my competitiveness. Through older sisters, I quickly found out ADPi had a plethora of intramural teams, so I signed up for the first team I could: flag football. While I had never played flag football, I was a quick learner and my sisters made it easy for me. I remember before the first game I was terrified as I barely knew the rules of the game and was still learning everyone’s names. That feeling of anxiety quickly faded over the 45 minute game as my sisters and I laughed, cheered, sweat, and built new friendships. I felt so welcome and happy among a group of girls I just met and proud of myself for stepping outside of my comfort zone. We then went on to play so many more games and bring home the championship trophy at the end of the season!

Born and raised in Atlanta, I was used to the big-city life, so moving to Statesboro was a big change for me. I was stressed about what this small town could offer me, but I needed to worry about what I could offer this small town. ADPi’s philanthropy is the Ronald McDonald House Charity, an organization that provides care and comfort for the families of ill and injured children. Through countless fundraisers, events, food drives, and more, the Epsilon Pi chapter works diligently to provide any relief we can for these strong families. My personal favorite philanthropy event is “Princes, Princesses, and the Pi’s.” On this day, we transform the ADPi house into a palace and open our doors to the children of our community to enjoy a magical afternoon. This year, I stepped into the role of Princess Belle where I read, sang, and talked to children and ultimately granted every little boy/girl’s wish to meet a “real” princess. Seeing the joy on their faces and knowing that I was helping my RHMC made it clear that I was in the right place.

As I come up on my 1 year anniversary of joining Alpha Delta Pi, I like to reflect on memories like thesethat remind me why I chose ADPi in the first place and what being an Alpha Delta Pi means to me:

To be an ADPi is to try new things and explore opportunities.

To be an ADPi is to help others in your community.

To be an ADPi is to eat 14 wings in front of all of Greek life for charity (that's a story for another time ;) )

To be an ADPi is to get involved in everything, as you never know how or when the Lord will use you.

Finally, I’d like to leave you with one of my favorite verses and one that truly captures what it means to be an ADPi.

Galatians 5:13, “You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love.”

XOXO,

Charlotte
